Former dry-cleaning facility, Durham, North Carolina
Durham, North Carolina, USA
Background
A former dry-cleaning facility contaminated soil and groundwater through prolonged tetrachloroethylene (PCE) emissions.
Technology Used
Biochemical reductive treatment combined with permeable reactive barrier (PRB) technology
Approach
A single-head pneumatic TMA 350 grouting system delivered chemical slurry injections, progressing from pilot testing to full-scale implementation.
Results
- Pilot phase (9 months): total CVOCs reduced from 2,540 µg/L to 71.2 µg/L (97% removal); PCE reduced from 2,400 µg/L to 6.2 µg/L (>99% removal)
- Full-scale phase (16 months): 98.4% PCE removal, 99.3% total CVOC removal
- Seven of eight monitoring wells reached near-background contaminant levels, with neutral pH and no toxic metabolic by-products
